About Humane Society of Pocahontas County

Find our adoptable pets at Petfinder.

Who We Are:

Since its founding in 1999, the Humane Society of Pocahontas County has been instrumental in spaying and neutering thousands of pets and strays, as well as arranging adoptions of hundreds more. Our rescue efforts have saved hundreds of abused and neglected cats and dogs. We are committed to a future where stray and abandoned animals in the county will be cared for in a modern facility.

The Humane Society is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3). Presently our funds come from donations, grants and fundraisers. We would like to invite you to join our organization as a member, supporter or volunteer. Our long term goal is that Pocahontas County will one day have a brand new animal shelter.

Since our society relies heavily on donations, we suggest that if you are interested in donating, you can donate in memory of a person or a pet. Donations can also be in honor of your current, special pet also. All donations are tax deductible. So please help the needy and homeless!

What We Do:

Our primary focus is to assist with spay and neuter costs for our county residents. Neutering pets is the most effective way to reduce unwanted litters of cats and dogs that usually end up dropped on someone's property, or euthanized at a shelter.

Our secondary mission is to help place the animals we shelter in good homes, either through adoption, or through rescue services. Our track record is very good: In 2011, we provided spay/neuter assistance for 261 dogs and cats. We adopted out more than 30 animals in-county and sent more than 50 dogs and cats out on rescue. We also help area vets with vaccination clinics through event promotion and assistance.

Our facility is located at 410 Second Avenue, Marlinton in a double-wide office building. Currently, we only shelter cats. As we continue to raise awareness and funding for a county animal shelter, we hope to gain the support of county residents and the County Commission to keep the momentum going. Please give us a call at 304-799-6767 or attend a meeting to see what you can do to help!

She volunteers two days at the office during her lunch hour, caring for animals, answering the phone, completing spay/neuter vouchers for clients, and even mowing the grass. She heads up the "Strut your Mutt" fun dog show fundraisers held several times during the summer, and has organized a benefit concert at the Pocahontas County Opera House. Sunny is a graphic designer by trade, and takes care of HSPC advertising for events and clinics. A transplant from Kanawha County, she lives with her husband, dog, four cats, and six horses outside of Marlinton. (formerly Geocities.) She has a pet parakeet and a love for animals in general, having had many pets as a child. She is an Army brat by birth. The hardest question to answer is, "Where are you from?" She has lived in MD, Japan, TX, Germany, GA, VA, MO, NC, AZ and presently resides in Elkins, WV. As a child, she was always learning computer programming with DODDS (Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools) at multiple duty stations. She grew up traveling, and enjoys it to this day.
